The Green Frog Packaging blog is written for people who choose packaging for supplement and nutraceutical brands: founders, purchasing and sourcing managers, contract manufacturers and co-packers. It explains the science, the standards and the regulations behind plastic packaging claims — and, yes, it advocates for our own product. We say so plainly rather than pretending to be neutral.
Who we are
Green Frog Packaging makes BioBottles® and BioCaps®: finished, ready-to-fill HDPE and PP bottles and closures for the supplement industry, produced in our own factories with our PlasticIQ® technology. We are based at 220 North Main Street, NOMA Tower Suite 500, Greenville, SC 29601 (877-826-8853). The consumer-facing product site is biobottlesusa.com; the company site is gogreenfrog.com.
What BioBottles are — and are not
BioBottles® are oxo-biodegradable plastic. PlasticIQ® is integrated into standard HDPE and PP at low concentration, so the bottle performs like ordinary packaging — same durability, same shelf life — and remains recyclable where local programs accept HDPE and PP. If a bottle escapes proper disposal, PlasticIQ® is designed to prevent it from persisting as microplastic: oxidation reduces the polymer's molecular weight, and the resulting material is then assimilated by microbes.
Three things we do not claim: BioBottles® are not compostable (they are not certified to composting standards and should not go in compost); they are not plant-based bioplastics such as PLA or PHA — we think those materials have real drawbacks for supplement packaging, and we say why; and we never describe them as simply "biodegradable" without the oxo- qualifier, because that word has a specific legal meaning under the FTC Green Guides.
How the claim is tested
The relevant standard is ASTM D6954, "Standard Guide for Exposing and Testing Plastics that Degrade in the Environment by a Combination of Oxidation and Biodegradation." It has three tiers, and a material has to pass all three:
- Tier 1 — abiotic degradation: exposure to heat and UV, measuring the drop in molecular weight below the threshold at which the plastic loses its structure.
- Tier 2 — biodegradation: measuring the carbon dioxide evolved as microbes consume the degraded material.
- Tier 3 — eco-toxicity: confirming what remains is not harmful to plants, invertebrates and soil.
Our technology has been tested under ASTM D6954 by independent laboratories, including Intertek, and the material is compliant with FDA requirements for food contact, the FTC Green Guides and California SB 343. How articles are produced and reviewed
